Petal & Vine Block 13 & 14

Petal & Vine Block 13 & 14

Welcome to Petal & Vine

This collection is a whimsical quilt composed of sixteen blocks, each featuring its own fanciful flower surrounded by twirling, curling vines. It has simple pieced backgrounds and large appliqué pieces making it maker friendly.

Petal & Vine is part of my free monthly block pattern give-away. To learn more about this collection, fabric requirements for the full quilt, block release schedule, how to get free patterns and more, please read the Petal & Vine - Start Here" Blog.  ➡️HERE

This month we are stitching blocks 13 & 14. Let's take a look....

Stitching Tips

Most of my appliqué designs include some embroidery. I love the extra detail embroidery can add. So this month I'm including a few embroidery tips.

  • In this pattern it calls for 2 strands of floss for most of the flower details. This keeps the lines fine and dainty without being too fine. The outline stich is used. So how small should the individual stitches be? I generally base this on a couple things. First, how thick is the thread, or how many strands of floss are being used. The thinner the thread, the smaller the stitches. Thicker thread, make the stitches slightly longer. Second, how tight the curves are in the design. If the design has very tight curves and turns and is very detailed, I shorten my stitches. Doing this keeps the stitching line smooth. If stitches are too long, they will show rather than looking like one smooth line.
  • The vines are stitched with 3 strands of floss. Alternately, you may use size 8 pearl cotton thread. This equals 3 strands, but unlike floss, the threads in pearl cotton do no separate. When I need a slightly heavier line, I often stitch with pearl cotton. This pattern uses the chain stitch for the vine. The chain stitch gives a heavier looking line than the outline stitch with the same thread.
  • When finishing my embroidery on the back, I like to weave my ends through my stitches for an inch or so. This way the ends aren't laying loosely and shadowing through to the front of your work. It also leaves your back tidy.
