Stitching Tips
- How important is it to match the thread color to the appliqué patch? Personally, I think it's an important factor to consider. I like to use a fine cotton thread for my hand appliqué stitching. I find it's easy to work with and the stitches hide beautifully. That's especially true when the thread matches the color of the patches. It gives a little forgiveness if your stitching isn't perfect. In other words, if your stitches are a little too deep, large or crooked, the matching thread helps to hide these stitches. That's very helpful for beginners and those with less than perfect vision.
- What if you can't match the color? My basic rule of thumb is go slightly darker than lighter and try to match the tone if not the exact color.
- When trying to pick the best thread color, don't just look at the thread on the spool. Lay a strand across the fabric. This will give you a much better visual. Sometimes I'm surprised at what thread matches best when I do this.
- There are times you just have to match the best you can. If you're careful with your stitching and keep you stitches small, you should still be able to hide your stitches pretty well.
